Master and Slave Logic in DMX512
Control logic in a DMX512 system is refreshingly simple: one device sends data and everything else applies it. That sending device is usually called the controller; everything else is a receiver. The words “master” and “slave” get used in the trade, but they are not really part of the protocol — and the distinction matters more than it sounds.
In short
- One controller transmits; every other device only receives.
- Data flows one way — fixtures never answer back (except with RDM).
- Each fixture reads the channel block starting at its own address.
- “Master/Slave” mode in a fixture menu is a standalone feature, not DMX.
- A fixture left in slave mode mimics an addressing fault.
What actually happens on a DMX line
The operating principle is one-directional and has only three parts:
- One device produces the DMX data (the controller).
- Every other device receives it (the lighting fixtures).
- Data flows in one direction only.
Controller -> DMX line -> Lighting fixtures
Fixtures never send data back to the controller. The one exception is RDM, which adds a return path on the same pair of wires.
What really matters: addressing
Devices on a DMX line do not behave in a master–slave hierarchy. Each one simply reads the data at its own address. For example:

The controller transmits all 512 channels every frame; each fixture listens only to the block starting at its own address and ignores the rest. This is the single most important working principle in DMX.
So what is “Master / Slave” mode on a fixture?
Many LED fixtures offer a Master/Slave option in their menu. Despite the name, this has nothing to do with the DMX protocol. In that mode:
- One fixture generates an effect internally.
- The others copy the same effect.
- No DMX controller is involved at all.
It is a convenience for small installations where nobody wants to carry a console — a few pars in a bar, for instance. As soon as you connect a real controller, put every fixture back into DMX mode, or the ones left in slave mode will ignore you.
A common source of confusion
If one fixture in a chain refuses to follow the console while the rest behave, check its menu before you suspect the cable. A fixture accidentally left in Master or Slave mode looks exactly like an addressing fault, but no amount of re-addressing will fix it.
The whole logic in two lines
You can hold the entire model in your head like this:
- The controller talks.
- The fixtures listen.
That is genuinely all there is to it. The DMX512 standard itself is published by ANSI as ANSI E1.11.
